The BELQUA National Committee was created in 2006 as one of the Belgian National Scientific Committees of the Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium. It is the Belgian representative of INQUA, the International Union for Quaternary Research.
The purpose of BELQUA is to encourage the Belgian research on various aspects of the Quaternary period, either research conducted in Belgium or by Belgian researchers. It aims to encourage young researchers and to promote scientific communication. All fields related to Quaternary research are welcome, e.g. geology, climate, archeology, ...

During the Quaternary (the last 2.6 million years) the Earth has repeatedly undergone substantial climatic and environmental changes that interfered with ecosystems and social systems. The Quaternary therefore povides a rich and ever-fascinating palette for research that aims to better understand the dynamic processes on the Earth’s surface. |
Once every four years, Quaternary researchers from all over the world meet at the INQUA Congress to exchange the latest research results and develop agendas for the years to come. In 2011, the Congress will take place in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. The University of Bern is at the cutting edge of research on climate and climate impacts, among many other fields of excellence. Bern provides a quality of life other capitals can only dream of. It was made an UNESCO World Heritage site because of the unique beauty of its medieval city centre and its location at the foot of the Alps. All this will make for a stimulating ambience and a memorable stay in one of the most beautiful locations in Europe.
